Hello, I'm Lucy, thank you for visiting my page. I'm a stand-up comedian and I've finally got round to writing my first proper book "Middle Aged Women Get Shit Done" at the age of fifty-three.
For the last 30 years I've been doing stand-up comedy. You might remember seeing me on shows like "Have I Got News for You" or "Mock the Week" back in the early 2000s, or more recently on "Would I Lie to You" or "QI". I am addicted to BBC Radio 4, and I'm lucky enough to appear quite frequently on "The News Quiz", "Just a Minute", "The Unbelievable Truth" and "I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue".
In 2014 I wrote a play called "The Fair Intellectual Club", which I adapted into a series for Radio 4. It's loosely based on the true story of a society of girls from Edinburgh in the early 1700s. They got together to study maths, science and other things they found interesting, but which were normally the preserve of boys.
I've dabbled in acting, and I was in a production of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" starring Christian Slater and Frances Barber. I played a nurse with two lines, but it was tremendous fun. I also had a blink and you'll miss it appearance in BBC1's Eastenders as a character called Rita who was described as "a downtrodden mum who doesn't have time to care about her appearance." They let me wear my own clothes, so make of that what you will.
You can currently find me on tour around the UK with a show called "Let Yourself Go", which explores the delights of relaxing into midlife. I wanted to write a book about how amazing middle aged women are, because I'm not sure we get the appreciation we deserve from society at large. I've written about the challenges that my friends and I moan about when we get together. When I'm on tour, I meet dozens of other women of a similar age, and I've discovered that lots of us seem to be struggling with the same things: being part of the Sandwich generation, feeling pressure to look or dress a certain way, generally feeling VERY TIRED all the time.
We might not think that what we’re doing is particularly noteworthy or amazing, but one way or another, we are all getting shit done. Whether that’s caring for younger and older people, keeping our careers on track, or simply managing not to burst into tears in the middle of Lidl when the enormity of it all overtakes us, and we can’t decide whether or not we really need an inflatable canoe.
I hope you like the book, I've tried to keep it quite light, even though it deals with some quite serious stuff. I'd be delighted if you follow me here and/or on social media, although I'm not a very active user - that is definitely some shit I need to do more of. I'm @lucyportercomic on Instagram, Facebook and Bluesky
