Es un buen ejemplo de humor grotesco que consiste en mirar las cosas "desde el otro lado de lo trágico" (el relato comienza con el barbero que encuentra la nariz, no con quien la pierde). Se da una fusión entre lo real (descripción de ambientes, relaciones entre personajes...) y lo fantástico que dota al relato de verosimilitud. El relato que nos ocupa es una muestra de humor absurdo aunque cargado con una fuerte dosis de crítica a una sociedad obsesionada con la apariencia y el ascenso en la escala social.
