From the global bestselling author of Moonflower Murders and Close to Death comes an unputdownable new mystery in the Hawthorne and Horowitz series.

The Word is Murder, the first book in the Hawthorne series, is about to be made into a major feature film.

The actors have been cast, the script written, and filming has already started in Hastings.

But when Hawthorne and Anthony visit the set, they find a far from happy family.

The director’s pretentious, the screenwriter’s an eco-warrior, the two stars hate each other, and the producer has run out of money.

And things are about to get much, much worse.

In the middle of shooting, the actor playing Hawthorne is stabbed – which leaves the real Hawthorne with no choice. He has to step in and investigate his own murder.

Because the killer may not have got the right man. Was it Hawthorne himself who was meant to be the target?

A Deadly Episode is a wild ride through a world that the author knows only too well, and the most personal case Hawthorne has had to deal with so far.

Critic reviews

My favourite Hawthorne yet. Utterly brilliant, and a complete treat. A veritable nesting doll of mysteries in one book, it’s something very close to genius. Anthony Horowitz is in a league of his own
The sixth outing for the sleuthing duo of Horowitz and Hawthorne, A Deadly Episode, is another winner.
A meta romp
Brilliant . . . the author combines delicious dry humour with a rigorous fair-play whodunnit, but this installment’s Scream-like Hollywood satire takes it to another level
Delightful
Clever and playful, this is meta-mystery at its best.
[Horowitz’s] "Overactive imagination” has once again produced a chunk of five-star entertainment
The sixth in the brilliant Hawthrone and Horowitz series... (is) layers of fun.
Horowitz is quite simply a brilliant writer - he's funny, smart and knows how to craft a good story.... Be warned. Horowitz is addictive
I take such pleasure from this series and this, the sixth, is every bit as good as its predecessors... dare I say, my favourite.

I’ll start by saying that I am a huge fan of AH’s work and this particular series is a masterclass in confident storytelling by someone who has earned their stripes.

But I’ll finish by saying that I personally didn’t enjoy this as much as the other tales in the series. It was still an enjoyable listen and RK smashed it out of the park as usual. One of the things I like is how AH usually casually, almost nonchalantly weaves his creative life (Foyles War, Alex Rider etc) into his books but it was too prominent for me and not enough to hinge the main story on. Had a touch of the Charles Paris about it all. I also prefer more of and adventure with DH and AH and this was also a shorter book than the others. It felt a little disjointed. Anyway, whilst my least favourite I would still recommend a listen and as always, very much look forward to the next instalment.

AH is a an exceptional writer but…..

I love this series of books. love the characters, the banter. the self deprication, and the rather imaginative plots. However, somehow I didn't love this one as much. I am undaunted, and I await the next with bated breath and an optimistic heart!

I can't put my finger on why I didn't live this one as much.

It was short and worked out the ending by half way. Bit disappointing compared to earlier books.

Rory Kinnear yet again excellent

Initially always felt quite sorry for Anthony , not only because Hawthorne ran the rings around him and seemed to enjoy doing it, but because Anthony never quite seemed to stand up for himself enough.
This is another brilliantly written instalment . It’s many layers again peels away more of the characters personalities and gives you a tantalising glance into Hawthorns history .
Overall finished far too soon can’t wait for the next instalment

Good fun Hawthorn and Horowitz. Good story and characters, Felt like H&H didn’t work together very closely in this, maybe would have preferred it if they had a bit more. But still had all the best parts of the relationship from the earlier books.

Loved it
