About this listen

When Nicole Rayburn adds a historic bookshop to her list of promotional venues, she meets the owner, Deborah Dolan, who’s desperate to discover what happened to her Victorian ancestor. A well-respected playwright, Edgar Hilliard seemingly had it all: professional success, a thriving business, and a loving family, but according to family lore, Edgar walked out one night, never to return, an unfinished manuscript his only legacy to future generations.

Deborah’s obsession with Edgar borders on the unhealthy, but despite her better judgment, Nicole can’t seem to walk away from this new challenge and enlists the help of her friend, Dr. Quinn Allenby to solve the mystery. Nicole and Quinn are determined to discover what happened to Edgar, but their search for answers is hindered by unexpected personal obstacles that threaten to alter the course of their lives forever.

A really good listen

I haven’t finished listening yet, but I’m finding this novel really gripping. I’ve enjoyed all Irina Shapiro’s books but this is definitely the best yet for me. Once again though, hearing the narrator crucifying the English accent has really spoiled my enjoyment of this book. I’m suffering through it just because the story is good.

My favourite Irina Shapiro story so far, ruined by the narrator

great storyline

The narrator’s speech pattern was unnatural and unconvincing as an UK based English speaker. Some of it was amusing though! The language used was too American and modern for the 1800’s too.

Strange narration and speech patterns!

I love the story, and do respect how difficult it must be to narrate, but some of the accents she uses made me cringe.

the false "posh" accent
