This book was previously published as The Silent Girls

Truth is often buried where few dare to look.

A young girl disappears, echoing an unsolved murder from the past. The police think they’ve found their man, just as they had before. But they've already got it badly wrong once, forcing facts to fit a theory to convict an innocent man.

Determined not to let that happen again, Detective Sergeant Anna Gwynne must go into the darkness that cloaks the worst of crimes and risk damaging herself in the process.

Can she get what she needs before another life is lost, or could the horror lead her down a path that puts her own life in grave danger?

An absolutely page-turning thriller that will have you hooked. If you love the novels of Angela Marsons and Simon McCleave, you won’t be able to put down An Unpardonable Act, Book 1 in the Anna Gwynne Black Squid trilogy.©2018 Dylan Young (P)2026 W.F. Howes Ltd.

the narration was good but this author does tend to make five out of one page. I won't be getting this series. only tried it because I liked the warlow series, although this too was overly long winded.

long winded

I just love all Rhys's books and now there's a new inspector on the scene. Great story about the forest of dean, which I know very well.

Great story

It's not often that I credit a narrator for enjoying a listen, this one spoke consistently and unhysterically and the story came across beautifully, I didn't have to adjust volume or frantically pull out my earbuds for sudden loud screechy accents or women or childrens' forced voices. And there was no clangy music at the start, middle or end. In addition, I really did like the story, gripping to the end. Except for one thing which didn't match this author's previous punchy and straightforward dialogue, the bit where he throws in at the very end, for whatever reason, that Anna wants to ban her mother from her bedside for criticism. So stereotypical. At this point it was a surprises because from the rest of the book I didn't get that he was that kind of frothy author, so I hope he doesn't join the stereotyping bandwagon. I live near the location of where much of the story is set and look forward to the next book and am glad to see it has the same narrator.

ENJOYED NARRATION

I loved the narrator and the characters are really well drawn. The twist was great and I had no idea it was coming. A superb read (listen) from one of my favourite authors.

The main character is very believable

Turned off as the dullest thing Ive listened to in a year 🫪 might be the narrator making it worse, I get spoilt by the brilliant narrators on audible.
