In the summer of 2007 the British Army's 662 Squadron deployed its most potent weapons system in combat for the very first time - the iconic Apache attack helicopter. This is the definitive story of the aircraft and of the crew who fly her, and of their baptism of fire in the battle for Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Under the call-sign Ugly, four of the Army Air Corps' finest pilots flew a relentless series of missions during their 100-day deployment, stretching the aircraft, and themselves, to the limit. Apache Dawn recounts these operations from the perspective of the aircrew, plus the soldiers on the ground who owe their lives to the Apaches' intervention during the white-hot heat of battle. Bestselling author Damien Lewis has been given unprecedented access to the pilots of the Apache Attack Squadrons - an elite band of warriors operating at the very limits of modern warfare. Apache Dawn is their story, and it is one of untold bravery and resilience against all odds.

Really great listen, could have listened forever. A very interesting after listening to Ed Macy’s accounts. Leads on nicely. Highly recommended.

Excellent. I really enjoyed it from start to finished. I have read lots about men on the ground, never anything about apache pilots.

I found that the further I got into this book I found it harder it was to put down. A great feeling of what it was like for the lads on the ground requiring urgent support from the Apache team. superb narration.

Great insight to British air warfare

I don’t know much about the army air core before reading this book and baulked at the cost to UK PLC of purchasing the apache’s from the US but the money spent on putting together these amazing pilots and weapons teams is well worth it in terms of the armed forces personnel they saved in Afghanistan. A well written book as ever from one of my favourite authors. Written as a fly on the wall in places it takes you right into the cockpit. I would have liked more detail about the fort mission as it’s skipped over quite shortly in the book and in other books I have read on the mission does not do the pilots and teams justice here. How on earth did the marines who held on to the wing straps not get an award. Just today Gareth Southgate has become a “Sir” yet you had the legends holding onto a helicopter wing flying into a fort spitting rockets and bluets at them.

A must read book.
