About this listen

Out in the darkness of space, something is targeting the Greatships.

With their vast cargo holds and a crew that could fill a city, the Greatships are the lifeblood of human-occupied space, transporting an unimaginable volume - and value - of goods from City, the greatest human orbital, all the way to Tradepoint at the other, to trade for xenoglas with an unknowable alien species.

It has always been Marca Nbaro's dream to achieve the near-impossible: escape her upbringing and venture into space.

All it took, to make her way onto the crew of the Greatship Athens, was thousands of hours in simulators, dedication and pawning or selling every scrap of her old life in order to forge a new one. But though she's made her way onboard with faked papers, leaving her old life - and scandals - behind isn't so easy.

She may have just combined all the dangers of her former life, with all the perils of the new....

I NEED the next book!!!
The author has managed to combine the riproaring adventure of 50s and 60s sci-fi with with true-to-life and wide-ranging characters who develop, with mystery, and a scrupulously believable vision.

The author's military experience drips from the page not just in-terms of the vivid personal or naval combat scenes, but in the weaknesses and demons that the characters overcome as they earn their place in a much needed family, but then the newly earned traumas and fears that come to haunt them.

That, an observant mind of our many social needs and idiosyncracies, and an obvious understanding of real-world physics leaves us free to enjoy this fast-paced but nuanced sci-fi adventure in a real-feeling and recognizable but very different world.

As with all the best sci-fi, the story is really about people and the narrator brings them to life perfectly, we need more like her!

This is certainly an author to watch.

A brilliant combination with engaging characters.

great story, the main character is a little too good but i loved the feel of the ship and it's setting.

I thought the general story was good but it was difficult to stick with as it felt way to wordy. Lots of unnecessary pointless chatter that felt it was there for the word count rather than good story telling. Way to many unnecessary "he said" and "she saids" during character conversations. Some characters had more than one name used which made it difficult to fathom who was talking or being talked about. Not sure if it was bad editing or narration but for the majority of the story there were no gaps between the end of one bit to the next. I ended up slowing the narration speed down to 90 hoping it would help but it didn't.
Its a shame as I liked the characters and thought the story was intresting. I would love to see where it goes but this series is a definite dnf for me now.

Annoying as could have been good

Went in blind and thoroughly enjoyed this adventure. The story raced along and kept me hooked the whole time whilst being excellently brought to life by Nneka Okoye’s incredibly skilled narration. I really hope there is a part 2!

New author to me and I didn’t know what to expect
