Addiction is an affliction.

As you crave you endure sweats, irritations, sleepless nights. Your life suffers, your job suffers.... Your family suffers.

But you need it. You have to have your fix.

Joe O'Hara is having a bad morning, and it's just about to get worse.

A random road traffic accident sends him on the path to addiction. Crack is the only thing that can give him any relief from his living hell - but it's a far cry from the crack you might think it is.

Crack is a psychological horror from D E McCluskey, author of The Twelve.

Nope, it isn't about hard drugs.

Nope,it isn't about skating on thin ice.

Nope, it isn't about a plumber's rear end!

It is about... wait no, I'm not going to tell you that - it might spoil it for you.

I finished listening to this a couple of weeks ago.But I wanted to leave some time between finishing it and writing a review.

If you like horror books then I recommend you try this. I'm thinking of early Stephen King here - the stuff he wrote while addicted to hard drugs, not the soft stuff he produces now. Crack is sick and twisted and not an easy listen. But it is very cleverly written and very interesting as a concept. The sort of book where at times you gasp out loud while listening but you just can't stop until you know what happens next.

The narrator is perfect. It can't have been an easy book to narrate but Tim Welch totally nailed it.

I've already put some more D E McCluskey on my kindle and I am looking forward to checking those out this summer. He's definitely an author to watch.

CRACK!

Crack is a great listen for anyone who loves that horror, thrill and rush type of feeling. When I say you will be taken for a ride, I mean it! The narrator, Tim Welch did a fantastic job at really making you feel as if you were in the main character's shoes. The way in which McCluskey pulls you in and is able to make you feel as if you were losing yourself in the story was fascinating. Don’t be fooled and think you're going to be listening to a story about crack because that is far from the storyline. The story is about the main character Joe, a weird and unusual sensation he develops and desires after a life changing event thus affecting him, his home-life and those around him. You want to listen to this book with open ears because at times you may hear some things that aren’t for the faint hearted. Note that this book isn’t a read for everyone, especially if you have a soft stomach to begin with. The reason why I enjoyed this book as much as I did is because you don’t normally hear twisted, dark humored, gruesome (at times) material like this on a day to day basis. While listening to him narrate, Welch makes storytelling feel as if time isn’t real. As I was listening to him speak I was drawn in more and more and time really felt like it just disappeared, reality seemed as if it disappeared as well in a sense. Overall, a great read for those of you who are like me who have tough skin for a story like Crack.

Exciting & thrilling

I was unsure what to expect when first listening to this but gosh was it a ride. Overall the story is well written, Joe, the main character is developed in depth and many times the book has you on the edge your seat. Where the real strength lies is within the horror and gore which is articulated well by the narrator. There are many intense moments throughout the book, all of which are described in graphic detail,. The author is able to conjure up horrid images in one's head while the narrator is able to deliver it with excitement and gusto. Overall I would recommend this book to those who enjoy fast paced thriller novels and not for those faint of heart!

Phewf, Intense

This is one hell of a brutal story showing with all disgrace how devastating addiction ruins lives. Addiction is NEVER an isolated problem hitting an individual. Addiction hits hard and it hits like a scattergun; it's hitting everyone in close proximity, both the addicted, the love ones, but also everyone else who happens to be a part of or just near.
Addiction comes in many ways and types, and with this story D.E. McCluskey have chosen an extreme type of addiction which facilitates making it painfully clear what the nature of addiction does.

The story also touches themes as mental health/instability and the problem/issue/potential dangers with handling over psychophamarca without throughout diagnosis and follow-up regularly. But it's peripheral touched, but enough to spark some thoughts going for the reader without it being a statement.

Thanks to D.E. McCluskey for a free promotion code to the audiobook for an honest review in return.

- A note about the narration.
Unfortunately I wasn't a fan of the narration. I did like his voice in general, but to be his intonation was weirdly off. He was clearly cable of adjusting his voice to different moods, etc. but I kept feeling it wasn't fitting the context. As always; narration is such a personal taste, and this might be me who's in the minority with this one.

Brutal story of the violence of addiction
