'Essential . . . An urgent reckoning with institutional violence, curatorial practice and the meaning of freedom' Dan Hicks

'Daisy Dixon is the guide you need in encountering the disturbing side of human expression' Helen Carr

'A zesty new history of "dangerous art" . . . Skips with panache across periods and genres . . . Even at its most provocative, Dixon's book remains lucid and engaging' Daily Telegraph

What makes an artwork immoral? Why do these troubling creations have such a hold on us? And how should we deal with them?

We live in a moment when the dangers of art seem more prevalent than ever: artists are 'cancelled' for their misdeeds, public statues are toppled, images of violence and obscenity await us at the touch of a button. But as this provocative new history demonstrates, we humans have always used art to make sense of the less innocent aspects of ourselves and the world around us.

In Depraved, philosopher of art Daisy Dixon takes the reader on a journey through some of the most volatile and contentious works ever produced - from prehistoric sculpture to extreme metal music, Renaissance paintings to videogames. She reveals how beautiful art can sometimes be the most insidious, and why the greatest threat might lie in our own judgements about the art we censor or condemn.

Above all, Dixon builds a powerful case for returning the terrible gaze of our disturbing creations, showing how we can confront them head-on and tame their toxic effects.

As someone who has only recently started studying philosophy of religion and ethics, I was never really focused much on aesthetics and art regarding ethics.
a friend of mine who studied history of art (at Peter house no less) recommended me this after talking to her about the cross over and it has been enlightening, I also found it quite accessible and well preformed, an easy listen, so I consumed it quickly and am now going through making more thorough notes.

I will note, I’m not sure if this is a problem with audible or the publisher but the accompanying PDF wasn’t attached… luckily I do have the physical copy

I didn’t expect the topic to draw me in so much

Depraved is written (and read) in such a beautifully conversational style. With Dr Dixon’s expression and passion shining through (including the rather joyful bounce in her voice as she delivers some WAP lyrics). We are seamlessly guided through a multitude of art forms and historic events across the centuries from 4th century BCE paintings to recent film quotes (the Barbie movie) and even modern drill music. This approach is wonderfully entwined with Dr Dixon masterfully framing topics with context, definitions and philosophical tools throughout. As a result, we navigate what could be perceived as rather dark and heavy topics without feeling the weight they might otherwise carry.

Depraved concludes as honestly and personally as it begins and addressing how our collected reflections can be (and in some cases, are being) handled in today’s world and, no spoilers, what we could do with our five headed Hydra.

Depraved is a thought provoking dive into depravity that you won’t regret.

A wonderful dive into Depravity!
