Summary

THE SUNDAY TIMES Music Book of the Year

Faith, Hope and Carnage is a meditation on faith, art, music, freedom, grief and love.

Created from more than forty hours of intimate conversations with the journalist Seán O’Hagan, it is a profoundly thoughtful exploration, in Cave’s own words, of what really drives his life and creativity. The audiobook has been recorded so that the listener, especially when playing through headphones, sits between Cave and O’Hagan.

The book draws candidly on Cave’s life, from his early childhood to the present day, his loves, his work ethic and his dramatic transformation in recent years. The audiobook features 16 musical codas and elements from the Carnage, Skeleton Tree and Ghosteen albums. It also includes an exclusive, additional 12-minute conversation between Cave and O’Hagan about the production of the recording.

Faith, Hope and Carnage offers ladders of hope and inspiration from a true creative visionary.

Really fantastic book. Despite the often very heavy subject matter it comes across like a podcast between two friends. One recorded late into the night in which discussions get very deep. We hear Nick’s views on art, hope, grief, faith, the present (and a little bit about the past). At times these views evolve over the course of the interviews. I’d suggest his last 3 albums, Skeleton Tree, Ghosteen and Carnage are required listening to get the most out of it as he explains the mindset behind these and the Red Hand Files website.
I’d also warn that if you’re someone who is easily upset that an artist is a real person with real flaws and opinions that may not match your own, its probably safest to stay away as Nick has some strong views on some hot topics at times. I loved it all, well done Seán for knowing when to sit back and when to push.

Fascinating

Once you get past the understandably stilted reading (two people reading out a transcript of their prior conversations), the themes, honesty and insight shown are so incredibly moving. Essential.

A beautiful book
