The Honourable Christopher Fancot, on leave from the diplomatic service in the summer of 1817, is startled to find his entrancing but incorrigibly extravagant mother on the brink of financial and social ruin - and more than alarmed to find that his twin, Evelyn, has disappeared without trace. Christopher - Kit - is forced into an outrageous masquerade by the tangled affairs of his wayward family: his rigid uncle, Lord Brumby; the surprisingly wily Sir Bonamy Ripple; the formidable old Lady Stavely and Evelyn's betrothed, Cressy. But in the face of Evelyn's continues absence, Kit's ingenuity is stretched to the limit....

In this typically wonderful and sweeping romance, Georgette Heyer shows all the skill that made her the queen of historical fiction for over 50 years - and won her a huge audience that continues to this day.

There's too little tension in this novel's romance. It's better when we're left guessing for a while. I also find the spendthrift mother less compelling than others in her novels. There are still some very good moments.

good but not one of Heyer's best

This was the first of Mrs Heyer’s novels that I ever read. One of my grandmothers had a friend who passed on the magazines in which it was serialised, and I had the complete tale to read when we arrived for our usual week of summer holiday. I was hooked at once, and thereafter devoured most of her output (the exceptions being ‘My Lord John’ and ‘Beauvallet’). This audiobook easily kept me entertained through an overseas journey, despite occasional mispronunciations or mangling of Regency expressions. I look forward to adding more to my collection!

The lazy way to enjoy Mrs Heyer’s world.

The reader's emphasis and phrasing of longer sentences was a bit erratic, and occasionally changed the meaning of the words. Not awful, but mildly jarring.

Fabulous story, never takes itself seriously.

As an old fan of Heyer and one who now has trouble reading due to eyesight issues I have discovered the joy of audible. The performance of False Colours by Callum Hughes is delightful and has me giggling as he brings these charming characters to life so skilfully. I
Would thoroughly recommend this to anyone who is needing a pick-me-up!

Happy days😀
