There are few things more irritating in fiction than an unfired "Chekov's Pistol." And you can't make a big deal of the fact that neither Cricket, Firefly nor Vole could read what was written on the side of the paper boat and then *Not* have it be a revelation at the end!

Likewise, the fact that the boy's father had also been vole's friend many years ago, but had now forgotten everything because "Dragons Live Forever, But Not So Little Boys" left me expecting a tearful reunion which never actually happened. So while it may indeed be my fault for expecting something from a touching story about grief which had an entirely different goal and purpose, and I still love the story in itself, I can't help feeling bitterly disappointed and even cheated by the author. -_-
