About this listen

Dog trainer and handler Jillian Lederman is moving with her pack to Libby, Montana, a place where she has made friends and hopes to find a fresh start.

It's time. For years, she's just been keeping her wounds fresh by staying in Missoula—where there were regular reminders of all she's lost—while the rest of the world has continued to move forward.

Perhaps the new house, the beautiful mountains, and a certain pair of clear, blue eyes hold the promise of new beginnings.

Since changing careers years ago, former FBI agent Lucas Wolff has found a much better work-life balance as a member of High Mountain Trackers. Still able to serve his community, he has also been carving out a comfortable existence for himself and is not looking to make any changes to it anytime soon. Not even for a particularly bold and ballsy redhead he's been trying to avoid.

That turns out to be an impossible feat when a plane crash during a blizzard sets both of them on the trail of a young girl, all alone in the mountains. But it soon becomes evident they are not the only ones looking, and staying safe means sticking close together.

There are some holes in your heart that will never be filled, those lost can never be replaced. But that doesn't mean your heart has to stay frozen and empty, there is room for more and whilst love doesn't make you forget the pain of that loss, it does help you focus on the good memories instead and provides hope for the future.
We met Jillian in book one of HMT 2G series and we knew then that she was running from her demons, she could have come across as a little abrupt and cold, but her care for the victims and her eyes gave her away. She cannot hide the pain and the haunted look in her eyes, and here we get all of her heartbreaking story, she thinks it has left her broken, but it just makes her the perfect person to relate to and rescue Hayley. Whilst she no longer gives her trust easily, she finds herself trusting Wolf immediately, not only with her safety but Hayley's too and very surprisingly with her heart too.
There is plenty of danger, intrigue and betrayal, but there is also a beautiful bond and blended family formed with Jilly, Lucas, Hayley and their eclectic mix of imperfect but gorgeous rescue dogs.
This 2G series continues the same great series that we fell in love with with the added bonus of all our favourite cast members from the original series. I originally read this on Kindle, but listened this time on Audible.

Devastatingly cruel
