About this listen

In this long-awaited and candid memoir, Hitchens re-traces the footsteps of his life to date, from his childhood in Portsmouth, with his adoring, tragic mother and reserved Naval officer father; to his life in Washington DC, the base from which from he would launch fierce attacks on tyranny of all kinds. Along the way, he recalls the girls, boys and booze; the friendships and the feuds; the grand struggles and lost causes; and the mistakes and misgivings that have characterised his life.

Hitch-22 is, by turns, moving and funny, charming and infuriating, enraging and inspiring. It is an indispensable companion to the life and thought of our pre-eminent political writer.

Narrated by Christopher Hitchens himself shortly before his untimely death, this is a poignant listening experience.

A wonderful recording of a remarkable individual delivered in his own unique style.

Christopher Hitchens was undoubtedly one of the most witty, erudite, informed and intelligent journalists of the 20th century. His mellifluous tone always reminded me of a scene from Blazing Saddles when Slim Pickens' character, Taggart, addresses Hedley Lamarr with the line "God darnit, Mr. Lamarr, you use your tongue prettier than a twenty dollar whore."
I got the impression that he, Martin Amis and Salmand Rushdi were terribly enamoured by their own undeniable intelligence but in the end they were men and dick jokes are dick jokes.
This was a fascinating book that I highly recommend.

Intelligent, well read, political, inspiring, intellectual/elitist, name-dropping, maybe self important - but it is an auto-biog.

A tour de force but quite demanding

A remarkable individual that provides an interesting insight to his life, there were times when I felt that his honesty was liberating and at times frightening but refreshing. I very much enjoyed listening to Christopher delivery, it was l imagined , like being in conversation with him. I have listened to many books 400 plus, but on this occasion I will also purchase a hard copy for future reference, one of the most interesting books I have ever listened to.

Extraordinary, complicated, unputdownable!

Absolutely mesmerising, loved every minute of it. Christopher's breadth of language and literature makes his memoir immersive, as he journeys through his quest for justice and freedom. Christopher, you're sadly missed.
