This book will make your birth better. It is for every woman and every type of birth.

As featured on Dragons’ Den.

Expert hypnobirthing teacher and founder of The Positive Birth Company, Siobhan Miller has made it her mission to change the way women around the world approach and experience birth. Through her teaching she seeks to educate and empower women—and their birth partners—so that they can enjoy amazing and positive birth experiences, however they choose to bring their babies into the world.

In this book, Siobhan debunks common myths about hypnobirthing and explains why she believes it can make every type of birth a better experience—from a water birth at home to an unplanned caesarean in theatre.

So, what is hypnobirthing? Essentially, it's a form of antenatal education, an approach to birth that is both evidence-based and logical. Hypnobirthing certainly doesn't involve being hypnotised; instead, it teaches you how your body works on a muscular and hormonal level when in labour and how you can use various relaxation techniques to ensure you are working with your body (rather than against it), making birth more efficient and comfortable.

Siobhan's advice and guidance will change your mindset and enable you to navigate your birth with practical tools that ensure you feel calm and in control throughout.

By the time you finish this book you'll feel relaxed, capable and genuinely excited about giving birth.

Halfway through the book, I noticed how it avoids the word "mother" and consistently talks about "the person in labor" or "the person giving birth", referring to "they/them". This awkward choice of gender-neutral language in the context of giving birth distracts from the overall content and makes me question its seriousness.

Helpful, but odd language

This book has some great wisdom but weird and jarring language. For whatever an otherwise great book on natural birthing is scared to say "mother" and "breast feeding" and uses "birthing person" and the baffling "chest feeding".

Great but weird language

I was recommended looking into Hypnobirthing by a friend. After a difficult first birth, this supported her massively with her second. This is my first pregnancy and while I tend to take every in my stride, there were of course the natural niggles of “OMG what am I going to do” “how am I going to do this”?! I’m someone who finds calmness in knowing what’s going on and can become stressed if felt kept in the dark. This book gave me everything I needed to understand the whole process of bringing my baby into the world - the reassurance that I can do this and that my body knows what to do. I now know my preferences but I also know what I’m comfortable with if things don’t go to plan and how to make my plan clear. Not everything was for me, but this book takes a non-judgemental approach so I felt confident taking the parts that I want and not the parts I don’t. I’m genuinely finishing this book excited for labour - I can’t wait to meet my baby!

All pre-stress gone!

I now understand more about birthing and what my preferences are for when it happens. A very useful read for a first time mum.

Informative and useful
