Critic reviews

‘Patrick’s early life is a Dickensian tale of domestic violence and misfortune, transformed by chance and some good folk into the actor internationally admired and loved. He writes as well as he acts, with insight, truth and passion. Another Stewart Triumph!’ (Sir Ian McKellen)
‘There is so much to say about Sir Patrick. He is an amazing actor, great to look at, really funny and up for anything. He is a kind man… compassionate and sensitive…. but, as you will find when you read the book, his greatest asset as a human being is the fact that he is so completely and unapologetically himself’ (Whoopi Goldberg)
‘I read this book in a state of wonder, not just for the author’s gifts as a nuanced storyteller and sharp observer, but for those other remarkable gifts, of intelligence, sensitivity, wit, intuition, self-awareness and élan that were bestowed on him when he came into the world – all of which he has freely shared with us so long and so beautifully; and finished reading in a state of deep gratitude for the gifts, and the gift, of Patrick Stewart’

(Michael Chabon)
‘What a glorious memoir Sir Patrick Stewart has written. His prose is elegant and beautiful, diamond-like in its clarity and precision, and his recollections of his life are full of tenderness, insight, candour and pathos. If he hadn't been so busy all these years being a great actor, delighting us all, he could have been a great writer, and now with this book, he is one’ (Jonathan Ames)

I’m a runner and had this for company on my long runs and having Patrick alongside was wonderful. I laughed out loud and had tears on many occasions. As to be expected he’s a wonderful storyteller and the quality I most admired was one of honesty. I rarely write reviews and so while this isn’t the greatest or longest it says a lot to me about the effect it had. Thank you.

Captivated me

Sir Patrick, shares his best and worse times. My only criticism is that I wanted more depth at times to some of the stories. In a life so rich in experiences, this could have been several volumes.

Doesn’t skip life’s complexity

I really enjoyed this Audio Book and I really got the sense that Patrick Stewart had been totally honest about the highs and lows in his life and career.

An honest memoir

Sir Patrick came from the humblest of beginnings brought up in Yorkshire with a loving mother and an authoritarian violent father. His is very much the “ rags to riches “ story of a talented young man rising from obscurity to the heights of international stardom , meeting many others along the way and he tells it with candour and wit . He is more than a little surprised about how far he came and the trajectory of his rise. When it comes to his personal life he is also very honest , even though that honesty can put him in a less than favourable light . He reads his words in that beautiful mellifluous voice, making the whole experience a joy for the listener, I do recommend this book to anyone fan or not .

A long life well lived .
