About this listen

From the Sunday Times bestselling author of Daisy Jones & The Six.

A lifetime holding it together.
One party will bring it crashing down.

Malibu: August, 1983. It's the day of Nina Riva's annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: Nina, the talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer; and their adored baby sister, Kit. Together, the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over-especially as the offspring of the legendary singer, Mick Riva.

By midnight the party will be completely out of control.
By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames.

But before that first spark in the early hours before dawn, the alcohol will flow, the music will play, and the loves and secrets that shaped this family's generations will all come bubbling to the surface.

Malibu Rising is a story about one unforgettable night in the life of a family: the night they each have to choose what they will keep from the people who made them . . . and what they will leave behind.

Critic reviews

Completely slick and compelling, but also has such warmth and psychological insight. The characters were so real I almost found myself checking out their Wikipedia pages afterwards! It's the perfect, literal, beach read, with the emotional depth of the ocean. I was such a fan of Daisy Jones & The Six and this certainly didn't disappoint. (Holly Bourne)
Heart-wrenching and utterly compelling, Malibu Rising is a story about the fierce bonds between four fascinating siblings. The novel immerses us in a glamorous, star-studded world but at its heart it's full of raw human emotion. Its characters felt completely real to me - each one is flawed and messy and impossible not to love. (Beth O'Leary)
Thank you Taylor Jenkins Reid for the escapism we all need- a sex-on-the-beach cocktail (quite literally) of a book.
It's a full on escapist delight.
Unapologetically escapist beach read fiction, it's urgent style evocative of Hollywood Wives era Jackie Collins.
This summer's must-read novel.
Oh, how I longed to be in California with the glamourous Riva siblings when I was reading this [...] I did not want this book to end!
With Malibu Rising - a novel as redolent of California dreamin' as a Lana del Rey track - Jenkins Reid has lost none of her touch ... A stroke of genius ... Imagine Blue Water High and Selling Sunset had a lovechild, or Jackie Collins rewrote The O.C. , then combine these ingredients with warm, propulsive storytelling, and you'll get an inkling of this family saga's escapist magic ... Immersive and relaxing, as every great beach read should be.
When the party starts, it's celebrity mayhem but the heart of the book is family, love and loyalty. I adored everything about this punchy and incisive take on fame and its consequences, from the sympathetic characters to the salty surf atmosphere.
Think Selling Sunset with knobs on as Taylor Jenkins Reid again plunges us into the intoxicating, heat-heavy realm of intrigue of Malibu, this time amidst the world of the filthy rich. (2021 look ahead)

I'm trying to move out of my reading/listening comfort zone and initially listened to Daisy Jones and the six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. I've since also listened to others and no Malibu Rising. I really enjoy the style of writing and the way the scene is set so clearly for you in all of the books but especially so in this one. This style of book is totally different for me but I loved it and highly recommend.

Really enjoyable and easy to listen to.

I really enjoyed this book, I really like this author and have enjoyed her other books. Narration was perfect. Loved all the characters well drawn out.

Excellent book

First off the narration is superb, really giving you a sense of the different characters through voice. And what a varied cast it is - so many characters, yet all painted fully and with depth.

I wasn't sure if this was going to be my sort of thing, as I tend to prefer plot-driven rather than character-driven. But so much happens to the characters and is explored that there was enough content to keep me invested. There are certainly things/people to relate to, even if the circumstances are slightly different.

I loved the portrayal of real people - even though they are famous - by that I mean you see all the thoughts a person has, the good and the ugly. it is incredibly realistic and also nuanced.

The dual timeline worked well. It helped to add context and show the depth of feeling, and how things change (or not) through the generations.

Overall this was a pleasant surprise, that I looked forward to listening to!

Another Taylor Jenkins Reid book I never knew what was happening next with. Loved that it was set over one night as well.
Such vivid writing as well, made me see all the characters clearly throughout.
