About this listen

After a dramatic change in character, a rather usual middle-aged man begins carrying out a series of rather unusual murders.

Meanwhile Brad Shape, a crime beat reporter for the Manchester Daily News, is looking for the big scoop to revive his flagging career—and his crumbling marriage.

But when he finds one of England's most notorious serial killers, it will be Brad's biggest break...in more ways than one.

Note: this taut, edge-of-your-seat thriller is not for the faint of heart. You've been warned.

The narrator was a bit over dramatic in parts and the pacing of the book was not to my liking. Otherwise a few twists that were entertaining enough to keep you going to the end. No the worst out there. At least it's not 14 hours long. Give it a try.

Very northern crime

I couldn't engage with the main character and his drift into a dangerous world. I found the narrator brought over the almost soulnessness and the apathy of the character well. Book was Ok but carried by the narrator.

interesting premise .

Bradley Shape [call me Brad] is a crime reporter for the Manchester Daily News. He is also a voluntary prison visitor, when he goes to the prison to visit a dying man he learns a secret that will change his life forever. This story really gripped me, I thought the characters were well developed and engaging. The subject is somewhat grusome and not for the squeamish but a dark humour pervades all through the story keeping the listener on the edge of their seat. The ending although predictable as in you know it is going to end badly for someone, totally caught me napping. A highly recommended listen. A stirling performance from narrator Peter McGiffen brings the whole thing to life and shows him as a talented actor with many accents and voices in his repertoire.
I was kindly given a copy of the book by the narrator and leave this honest review.

Gripping.. as in Vice!

McLean's gritty crime thriller looks at the seedy side of Manchester through the eyes of a jaded journalist. The dark humour helps keep us on board with the protagonist as he takes a gruesome step into some dark places. The narrator helps us to relate to this questionable character. Recommended.
