Diana Gabaldon
Outlander, Diana Gabaldon's landmark novel of Scottish lore, has captured the hearts of millions of listeners around the world and catapulted her to the top of the New York Times best seller list.
Intrigue, danger, and desire merge in this lush novel of loyalty and time travel.
In 1945, Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon. Their blissful reunion is shattered when she touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone ruins and is instantly transported to a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans—in 1743.
Will Claire find her way back to her own time, or is her destiny forever linked with Clan MacKenzie and the gallant James Fraser? Davina Porter's lyrical narration will launch listeners into an exhilarating world of heroism, pulse-pounding adventure, and breathtaking romance as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love.

I loved this book!!! I downloaded it expecting to be a bit disappointed........time travel/scotland in the 1770's....really!! However, the storyline is thoroughly enjoyable and won't let you turn it off! The narration is extraordinary, you can instantly recognise the vast array of characters!. A word of warning - there are some quite saucy parts, and there are also some quite distressing parts.........I do not recommend having your nan in the car while you're listening to it at certain points, can be a little awkward.Unexpectedly Brilliant

One thing you have to understand about the whole Outlander series is it isn't a fantasy as such nor is it a time travel story. Yes there's aspects of mysticism and scientific unknowns and there's definitely time travel but these are all back drops to the main story which is all about the era the story is set in and the love story between Jamie and Claire.
The historic part is fantastic, you get a real sense of the place and time the book is set in. I'm no historian so if Gabaldon's portrayal of things is inaccurate I have no idea but its one of the best parts about the series. The time travel aspect isn't covered so much in this first book aside from the obvious, they delve into this more in later books.
The relationship is where Outlander slides into dodgy ground and some people take exception. Jamie and Claire's relationship is for the most part OK, the sex scenes can occasionally be a bit much and a fade to black would be better. The gratuitous use of rape is what usually gets peoples goat though, both with regards to Black Jack Randall's near rape of Claire and rape of Jamie and Jamie's behaviour towards Claire in the bedroom.
If you can get past this you'll both enjoy the story and the setting, it is only a small part of the book in the grand scheme of things.
The Production
The narration was very well done, the narrators tone and emotion perfectly fit all aspects of the story and her accents were brilliantly done. I did notice when listening at higher volume in my car there was a background hiss but it wasn't distracting enough to lessen the enjoyment.
An interesting and different story
