Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. It’s a prestige posting, and Andrew is thrilled all the more to be assigned to the ship’s Xenobiology laboratory. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

Not surprisingly, a great deal of energy below decks is expended on avoiding, at all costs, being assigned to an Away Mission. Then Andrew stumbles on information that completely transforms his and his colleagues’ understanding of what the starship Intrepid really is…and offers them a crazy, high-risk chance to save their own lives.

A decent Sci-Fi romp with some good humour, but for the love of all that’s holy it needs an editor. The dialogue is so turgid with all the repetition of the word “said” that it becomes a huge distraction.

love the idea, have a nice amount of meta in there. and if you enjoy star trek it's lovely. but it kind of lost it a bit towards the end, which sort of tainted it for me i must say

Good idea, but kind of lost the plot a bit

Funny and original, and brilliantly narrated. For everyone who's ever shouted at Star Trek.

A must for all Star Trek fans

as most people have mentioned before, there is way to much "he said" and it gets annoying and distracting.bif you can get past it, an interesting story

Interesting concept but too much "he said"

What made the experience of listening to Redshirts the most enjoyable?

A funny look on the lives of the expendable and unlucky Redshirts who we, the fans of science-fiction have long recognized, if you wear red – then your probably dead.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Any additional comments?

Something is terribly wrong about the flagship of the Universal Union The Intrepid.

New crew members soon realize that on the many frequent away missions, some poor redshirted ensign always seems to die a horrible and often bizarrely weird death. Be it Borgovian land worms / Longranian ice sharks or some other kind of weird & deadly thing.

If you grew up watching Star Trek you should enjoy this and be able to figure out what’s happening in Redshirts. That is, until they try and fix it.

Like in the original Trek - The Bridge Officers are very dangerous men to stand next to - if you were wearing the ensign’s redshirt then your only job was to get eaten, shot, stabbed, disrupted, frozen or crushed into a cube, providing the officers a corpse to get emotional over

John Scalzi is a master at the weird look at popular things and somehow stands them on their heads, and makes you expect the unexpected and makes you look at Star Trek in a different light.

If you love Trek then you will love this.
