Two years later, I ran a Boston qualifying 3:05 marathon at age 47. Running has transformed my life so much that I even became a certified distance running coach and started my own YouTube channel (albeit 10x smaller than Floris' channel) to help midlife runners like myself. So when I saw Floris had written Running Breakthroughs, I downloaded it immediately.
Even after two years of consuming endless training science, podcasts, books, and research, this audiobook hit me at exactly the right time. I was coming back from a 6 week mycoplasma infection that completely stripped away my top end fitness. Mentally, it was tough as part of me still expected to hit 3:05 marathon paces simply because I just did it a couple of months ago.
Listening to Running Breakthroughs on my long runs coming back from recovery was the wake up call I needed. The reminder to “start where you are” landed so deeply. It took away the pressure, the ego, and the frustration of comparing myself to my past self. That message alone was worth the entire book.
Content wise, Floris distills the essentials from hundreds of hours of Extramilest episodes and years of personal experience. Yes, some concepts will feel basic to highly experienced or science-geek runners like myself, but they’re essential foundations. Even as a certified coach, I appreciated the clarity and reinforcement.
The beauty of this book is how Floris and his team extracted the wisdom from all those podcast conversations and condensed it into a single, easy to digest framework, as well as the most important principles for becoming a stronger, healthier, happier runner into under nine hours.
If you’re a midlife runner, whether you’re starting at 35, 45, 55 or beyond, this book is a must-read (or must-listen). It’s grounded, accessible, evidence informed, and deeply encouraging. Highly recommended.
