Summary

Marian Stamford moves to her dream home: a snug little cottage in a Dorset village where nothing ever happens. She only wants a quiet life, a home for her unlikely family of two nieces and one troublesome kitten.

Before long, things take a darker turn. A man breaks out of prison, leaving the villagers rattled.

What are they afraid of?

Marian isn’t one for idle gossip. But she can’t ignore the telltale signs that someone has been sneaking into her garden at night.

And then there’s the gruff stranger she’s seen hanging round next door. Who is he? And what does he want with the farmer’s wife?

It’s up to Marian find out.

But in a village full of secrets, the truth can be hard to find.

I loved all of it. The story and the narrator’s voice were a perfect match which was a treat because often I start to listen to a book and have to abandon it because of the narrator.

A story slowly unfolding but not boring or silly.

While T he narrator read the story very well, was unsuitable. The voices were more for people in their 80s and so another younger and more vibrant reader should be found for this book

Sweet cosy mystery

If you are looking for book that has suspence, thrills, quick pace and twists and turns this book is not for you. I think this book can be categorizes as "cozy crime" bacause it's slow and comfortable pace. Most of the book builds up to the finale that happends suddenly and comes like out of the nowhere and that makes the book feel a little bit unattached. But those who don't need their books to have deeper meanings and things will enjoy this, weird palate cleanser of a book.

Weird but not the worst.

I really liked the cosy English village setting in a bygone age. I was trying to guess the date when the story was set. The Sound of Music is mentioned so I would guess this was the late 1960s or early 1970s but much of the story seems more dated than that. The two nieces that come to stay are delightful and I thought were the highlight of the book. There is not much of a plot except for a very predictable romance and a couple of mystery men and though the book starts well I started to get fed up with the rambling narrative where nothing much happens. The narration also wasn’t the best. I found it annoying and a bit confusing that the high pitched baby voice used for the 11 and 4 year old nieces was also used for the married next door neighbour so I could not tell them apart.
