Summary

No Slade = No Oasis. It’s as devastating and as simple as that. Noel Gallagher Slade’s music and style dominated and defined the 1970s. With six consecutive number one singles, they were the UK’s number one group and sold millions of records all over the world. At their peak, Slade enjoyed success and adulation not seen since The Beatles.

Now, for the first time, the man whose outlandish costumes, glittering make-up, and unmistakable hairstyle made Slade the definitive act of glam rock tells his story. Growing up in a council house in 1950s Wolverhampton, Dave always knew he wanted to be a musician, and in the mid-sixties, with Don Powell, he founded the band that in 1970 would settle on the name Slade.

Their powerful guitar-driven anthems formed the soundtrack for a whole generation, and their Top of the Pops performances, led by their flamboyant, ever-smiling lead guitarist, became legendary. But So Here It Is reveals that there’s much more to Dave’s life than Top of the Pops and good times.

The book uncovers surprising family secrets, tells the inside story of the original band’s painful break-up, explores Dave’s battles with depression, his decision to reform Slade and go back on the road, and his recovery from the stroke that threatened to cut short his career.

Told with great heart and humor, So Here It Is is the story of the irresistible rise of Dave Hill and the definitive account of his journey from working-class lad to global rock star.

Although I was born in 73, I love a bit of Slade and it was great hearing Dave's story. without Nod, I never had the inclination to go and watch 'Slade' live, but I've booked tickets to see Dave keeping the band alive - see you in Grimsby in December Mr. Hill xxx

I've had this in my wish list for about 2 years it feels like. I decided to give it a go and i'm thrilled I did. What a joy, a truly fabulous bio very different from anything else I've listended to. Dave no doubt had issues after his stoke as occasionally some words are mis pronounced and slurred BUT that makes it all the more authentic , real and heart warming.

Dave laughs at himself often, chuckling away after referencing some aspect of his mishaps, peopke he's met along the way and Slades life in music. It really does make such a positive difference to the listening experience.
You just feel its the two of you and he's recounting yarns laughing away as if he doesn't have a care in the world. Just glad to be alive, proud of his music and enjoying life.

What a brilliant bloke, As a 70's kid I heard plenty of Glam Rock, though my scene was more heavy metal such as Led Zep, Sabbath and ACDC. But that said I had a few of the glam rock in my collection and Slade were always up there with T-Rex etc.
Will anyone ever forget their Xmas Classic? It's always the go to every December isn't it.

Dave Hill is a down to earth, working class lad from the midlands who took a chance and went for it. Not everything worked but alongside Noddy Holder and the lads they made it and created some real bangers, classic tunes for the ages.
A brilliant bio, loved it. Great bloke.

This is far and away my favourite audiobook of all time (so far). The open, honest and conversational style is warm and appealing with Dave constantly adding to the written text with nostalgic chuckles and contextualisation.
I hope for more audio-renderings in this vain, why just read the book?
Brilliant.
