What follows is my original review for the story, with a few updates.
I burned through this in a couple of afternoons while enjoying the sunshine in my hammock, very apt given the book's nautical theme! As with Sunchaser, Emily Barlow, Author has created an effortless and enjoyable read. That's not to say though that it is simplistic, but is due to the tight writing and engaging story.
I enjoyed the detail of the world and the nautical elements, which give a really immersive feel. I was almost immediately thrown back into this second part of the Weatherworker Chronicles, with the first book still lodged in my mind, despite having read it some months back. I think this is because that scooted along really easily in the form of three easy to read novellas, but which were full of interesting detail. This created a memorable world. Stormkindler is a longer book, but also progressed well, with little that felt like unnecessary filler as you so often get. The strong female leads were refreshing to see.
The book is primarily set in a school of weatherworkers, but we see other elements of the world too. I really liked that the wider world building was incorporated by way of natural exposition in the children's lessons, which never felt like an info dump as can often happen.
The bad guys perhaps could have done with a little more time in the book, as I felt the reasons for their crusade were perhaps a little less clear. Their motivation was set out, but I felt it could perhaps have done with a chapter so this was better understood and perhaps we might then have sympathised more with their plight. They were very unlikable! That's not a bad thing but it made them somewhat one-dimensional. The hatred of difference is always difficult for me to understand, but perhaps that just me!
All in all I really enjoyed this installment in the Chronicles and I look forward to the next book!
