In the Philippines, there are shape-shifting creatures known as aswang. Among them, none are more feared than the manananggal, a vile creature that rips itself in half as it takes to the night to hunt for its favorite prey—the unborn.

To Alexander, his family on his mother's side were strangers, the country they lived in just a spot on the map, and their beliefs nothing more than superstitions and folklore.

While accompanying his mother on her trip home after the death of his chronically ill father, however, Alexander is shown a world larger than he could have ever guessed, one both as enriching as it could be deadly.

To keep his family safe, Alexander must risk his life to fight off an undead infant, make alliances with witches, and battle with the most dangerous creature of all—The Baby-Eater.

The Baby Eater is definitely not a light read, but if you enjoy dark horror with unsettling imagery and a constant feeling of dread, this book delivers. Chad Michael Morgan creates a creepy, disturbing atmosphere right from the start, and the story doesn’t really let up once it gets going.

What stood out to me most was how tense and uncomfortable the book feels in the best horror-movie kind of way. There’s a lot of psychological unease mixed with brutal moments, and it kept me curious enough to keep turning the pages even when things got pretty intense.

The writing style is sharp and direct, which works well for the tone of the story. Some scenes are genuinely disturbing, though, so I’d definitely recommend checking trigger warnings beforehand because this book leans heavily into dark subject matter.

I also appreciated that the horror wasn’t just shock for the sake of shock. Underneath everything, there’s still a story with mystery, fear, and characters trying to survive situations that feel impossible.

Overall, The Baby Eater is grim, unsettling, and memorable. It’s probably best suited for readers who already enjoy extreme or darker horror, but if that’s your genre, this one is hard to forget.

A story of origin turned horror in a battle of good versus evil for a boy whose father is his spirit guide. The boy goes onto team up with witches and defeat the Manananggal. The first chapter came as a sore subject to me being that my ex-husband cheat one me, but the more I listened the more I was intrigued. I kind of wish my ex and Alexander had traded places.
