About this listen

Bachelors, beware. For those who keep secrets and prey on the innocent, you will be exposed, with all your dirty little secrets laid bare to one and all. You have been warned....

Lady Olivia Haliford has had enough. Tired of seeing women lose their reputations, futures, and sometimes even their lives to scandal while the men walk free, she is ready to take back power and stand up for women everywhere. Along with her two closest friends, she plans to start an anonymous publication dedicated to dishing the dirt and exposing the secrets of society's most eligible bachelors. But in order to do so, she will have to make a deal with the devil....

Sebastian Colver, known as the Bastard of Baker Street, is feared throughout London as the city's most notorious gambling den owner and undisputed king of the underground. He agrees to be a silent partner in the publishing of the Gazette if she will use her connections to sponsor his sister and launch her into Society and away from his dark world.

But exposing the secrets of the rich and powerful can be dangerous. Almost as dangerous as a lady falling in love with the king of the underground.

Contains mature themes.

A great story that was so entrancing, I couldn’t put down, I was gripped from start to finish

Loved it

This was a good tale, narrated well. I assume that the author is from North America because a few phrases that would Never have been used in the 1800’s were used in the narrative: “2 blocks away” instead of “2 streets away” (we don’t even say that now! Also “WTF?” Instead of “FFS!” And I’m not sure that The Bow Street Runners worked alongside The Metropolitan Police (or even at the same time).

So all of those anachronisms aside, the story was interesting and engaging. This was a title that was in the Audible Plus Catalogue, which I am glad to have discovered and a series which I will continue to follow. Well worth a credit.

Almost Excellent!

I really enjoyed the book until the ending.

Throughout the book, Livvie, who has a disability & is mostly shunned by society because of it, reiterates that she's both a spinster, unmarriageable & has no wish to get married.

As an overlooked spinster, she mostly does her own thing, is independent & acts as if she doesn't give a fig about the ton & its rules.

She meets Seb, who is sexy, alluring & who finds her sexy & alluring in return.

All's well & good as they go about on their adventures & start falling in love.

There are quite a few plot contrivances along the way... as she should've been dead at least 50 times over, but plot dictates heroine must live...

Then comes what I call sillyville... firstly, one of the villains seems more intent on revenge than on looking after the person he's allegedly avenging... make it make sense!

The 2nd villain is infinitely more dastardly though...

The heroine however is easily influenced by other & cares more too much about societal dictates even though she's not really accepted by society because of her disability.

I really didn't like the resolution & really wish that the author had come up with a more fitting end to their love story.

Especially considering that the "solution" had already been thought about earlier in the book... but what I wish more, is that the author had made Livvie as brave as she'd been throughout the book!

The ending let it down... for me

This was a great listen, I found it in the plus category. Victorian books aren't usually what I listen to but this one was great.

Fantastic Listen

I liked both the MC’s and the sexual tension between them was well handled.
Interesting back stories of MC’s and a lovely happy ending. What’s not to like! 😂

Good plot.
