Critic reviews

A rip-roaring thriller . . . thoroughly enjoyable
A wonderfully complex book (Peter James, on Entry Island)
The Lewis Man shone like a bright star out of this year's book lists. Lyrical, empathetic and moving (Alex Gray)
He is a terrific writer doing something different
From the first page I knew I was in safe hands. I knew I could trust this writer (Sohpie Hannah)
Wonderfully compelling (Kate Mosse)
Western France - now May's own stamping ground - is as much a character in the book as the Hebrides were in his formidable Isle of Lewis sequence
Peter May is a writer I'd follow to the ends of the earth
Instantly struck by the beauty of the descriptions of the wild island terrain as well as by the roundedness and complexity of the characterisations
May's novels are strong on place and the wounds left by old relationships
Will have the reader relishing every tendency of description and characterization (Barry Forshaw)
Dark, exciting and atmospheric
Powerful and authentic
Fast, exciting ... an entertaining read that will also give food for thought
A tense and atmospheric thriller with a heart-stopping ending
Truly the best of May's series so far, this is not to be missed

I've read a couple of Peter May's other books and found them just okay then The Blackhouse popped up on sale and I dithered. After buying it I left it in my library for a while and listened to some mediocre books which I sent back to Audible before I finally started to listen to it. What a fool I was. This book is simply wonderful. Peter May took me to The Isle of Lewis and I felt the wind in my face, smelt the peat bogs and the fires. The screech of the gannets swirled in my head...oh how I wished I'd stumbled across the gem of a book ages ago.

Yes it's a murder mystery but it's so much more than that ...the murder is a tiny part of the book. It's the beautiful narrative by Peter Forbes that brings this book alive. All I can say is just buy it...it's everything an audio book should be.

I've downloaded the next two books.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were well drawn and came alive as the tale unfurled. Good plot and a nice little twist at the end.
