*WINNER OF THE WOMEN’S PRIZE FOR FICTION 2026*
In her letters to family and friends we come to know the life of Sybil Van Antwerp: stubborn, cantankerous, opinionated, always steadfast in her belief in the power of the written word.
But as the clock begins to tick for Sybil, the need for a few post-scripts to the life she’s led becomes apparent. Fixing her difficult relationship with her children. Taking a final chance at romance. Atoning for an old legal case which has come back to haunt her. And finally, reckoning with a devastating loss that she has spent the last thirty years holding close to her chest.
'Subtly told and finely made, The Correspondent is a portrait of a small life expanding' ANN PATCHETT
'The superbly talented Virginia Evans has written a novel of connection and daring' - ADRIANA TRIGANI, bestselling author of The Good Left Undone
'I was wowed by this deliciously brilliant book! Thank you, Virginia Evans, for a life beautifully told in letters, for creating a character whose mind struggles with her heart in a most intriguing, sympathetic, witty, and binge-worthy way' - Elinor Lipman, author of MS DEMEANOR

This book is so beautifully put together, Virginia I applaud your creativity and look forward to any future books that you write.

Absolutely Loved

I was apprehensive about the book being a compilation of letters but it really worked. The main character Sybil writes to everyone and you immediately note the difference in tone between how she writes for example to her daughter compared to how she writes to her son. There’s a story there.
And many more stories. The plot, the backstory and the characters developed and really engaged me over the 9 year span and I really missed them when it ended.
I then used my credit to listen to the audio and it gave a really nuanced layered second read. I do not usually read a book a second time! I was afraid the multiple narrators would make it sound like a radio play but they really brought the characters to life.
It has 4.65 on goodreads and many reviewers mention the quality of the audio book
Wonderful novel, outstanding narration

The joint narration is impeccable with each voice seamlessly woven into the fabric of the story, enhancing the depth of the story, without ever overshadowing it. The ensemble cast brings nuance to every moment, making the listening experience feel intimate and immersive with some of the voices, simply divine!
The author's writing is restrained yet powerful, exploring themes of connection, loss, and resilience with a journalist’s eye and a poet’s heart. It’s a story that doesn’t shout, far from it, it listens, observes, and reveals. As such the listener is asked to do the same and I found myself pausing to absorb what I’d just heard, and to reflect.
This is not just a book you enjoy, it’s one you carry with you. If you’re drawn to stories that offer complexity and give hope without sentimentality, The Correspondent is a masterpiece and absolutely unforgettable.
A Masterpiece
