In this gilded, gothic, and romantic new epic fantasy series from New York Times-bestselling author Hannah Whitten, a young woman's secret power to raise the dead plunges her into the dangerous world of the Sainted King's royal court.

Lore has been living by her wits since she was a child, running poisons for the cartel that took her in, avoiding the attention of the law, and keeping her illicit affinity for death magic a secret.

When a job goes wrong and Lore is captured by the Sainted King's warrior-monks, she expects death. But King August has a different plan. Entire villages on the outskirts of the country have been dying overnight, seemingly at random. Lore can either use her magic to find out what's happening - or face the pyre.

Thrust into a lavish court where no one can be believed and even fewer can be trusted, Lore must navigate an intricate web of politics, religion, and forbidden romance and solve the King's mystery. A mystery more dangerous and twisted than Lore can even imagine.

Spoiler alert: I found the FMC ‘s draw towards Gabe frustrating since he acted like a child in his loyalty towards Anton. I thought that Bastian was the far better suitor, although I have a feeling it will probably end up like some kind of threesome.

Excellent narration

Highly recommended- cannot wait for book 2. Loved the magic system. The narrator was incredible apart from how she pronounced August - awgoost! Drove me insane 😬

Loved this 🥰 not a dull moment

This kind of put me into a slump. Initially I liked the narration, but the nasaly voice for lore really started to grate on me. I thought the story was ok but a bit lackluster

Voice got annoying

The storyline is easily guessable throughout, lots of unnecessary explaining waiting for the FMC to cotton on. The husky voice that happens is a bit off putting. Overall 3.5* it’s not dire, but not amazing either.

Not the best.

The plot and characters are good and I do love drip fed world/lore building as a way to keep you engaged through out the book. My only real complaint is that there is a couple of instances where two of the main characters are either willfully blind or railroaded by the plot to be ignorant of certain abilities that a blind moron could have seen. But other than that it's an excellent book and I'm quite annoyed that the second book isn't out yet.

Great first entry
