Marion Sharpe and her mother seem an unlikely duo to be found on the wrong side of the law. Quiet and ordinary, they have led a peaceful and unremarkable life at their country home, The Franchise. Unremarkable that is, until the police turn up with a demure young woman on their doorstep.

Not only does Betty Kane accuse them of kidnap and abuse, she can back up her claim with a detailed description of the attic room in which she was kept, right down to the crack in its round window. But there’s something about Betty Kane’s story that doesn’t quite add up.

Inspector Alan Grant of Scotland Yard is stumped. It takes Robert Blair, solicitor turned amateur detective, to solve the mystery...

I have read this novel more than once but it’s so well written that it doesn’t matter that you know the outcome. Some of the attitudes are a bit dated but this just makes it a fascinating study of post war England.
Carole Boyd is easily one of the best readers on audible. Her voices are distinct and accents brilliant, without ever seeming to parody. Every sentence is exactly right and brings the book to life. I search for books that she has read as listening to her read is pure delight.

A gripping story superbly read

If you could sum up The Franchise Affair in three words, what would they be?

.... but look forward to listening to more... the story was well thought out, although a little predictable at times, and then right at the end there is an ahhhh moment, which is good for winter evenings. Carole Boyd narrates beautifully and brings each character to life.

A new author for me....

This novel is more than just a detective story; there is social commentary and amusing character vignettes. Josephine Tey can be e
both critical or generous toward a whole range of characters and groups including the clergy, but is fair and well-meaning to the upright and ordinary. The writing is anachronistic and she can be a little prudish, but I guess of it’s time. I failed to second guess the plot, was kept interested and easily enjoyed this middle class, anglophile scene
