About this listen

Piper was raised in a cult. She just doesn't know it.

Seventeen-year-old Piper knows that Father is a Prophet. Infallible. The chosen one.

She would do anything for Father. That's why she takes care of all her little sisters. That's why she runs end-of-the-world drills. That's why she never asks questions. Because Father knows best.

Until the day he doesn't. Until the day the government raids the compound and separates Piper from her siblings, from Mother, from the Aunts, from all of Father's followers - even from Caspian, the boy she loves.

Now Piper is living Outside. Among Them.

With a woman They claim is her real mother - a woman They say Father stole her from.

But Piper knows better. And Piper is going to escape.

The first few chapters are pretty much just confusing, but when you get into the story and understand what the author wants you to see it’s a good read and a good story. I wish there was something more to the “after” parts . Felt like it was missing something. But overall worth a listen

Kind of confused but I’m glad I didn’t stop reading

Stunningly written and well told, the format wasn’t so much for me but I would recommend.

Very clever writing

💛 Wow. This is an incredibly powerful story of cult deprogramming, told with intense empathy for its main character, 17 year old Piper. I walked in her shoes as she was torn away from the life she’d always known and plunged into a world she didn’t trust.

💚 I truly saw everything from Piper’s perspective, even as I willed her to see things differently. I felt her fear and uncertainty, her despair and confusion. I learned at her pace.

💜 As someone who’s always been interested in cults and the psychology behind them, this was fascinating. It looked at all the aspects of cult membership, from joining to living as part of one to leaving. I could see elements drawn from various real-life cults, especially Anne Hamilton-Byrne’s The Family, but also elements of WACO and Jonestown.

SOUNDBITE

🎧 Melissa Moran was excellent as Piper. Her voice is age appropriate and her delivery was filled with energy and emotion. She also did an excellent job with voicing different characters.

🎧 Excellent production values including very exact chapter listings.

SHALL I COMPARE THEE TO...

There’s a brilliant show called The Path, of which I was reminded throughout. But if you’ve ever watched a documentary about cults, this feels very authentic.

This Felt Searingly Real

Piper's story had me gripped from the start. I was eager for each chap, drinkng in both 'before' and 'after', unsure which part I wanted to hear most. The characters feel so real, and it could almost be a memoir. This will start with me for a long time.

Heartfelt and heartbreaking
