About this listen

Bloomsbury presents The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories by Ken Liu, read by Corey Brill and Joy Osmanski

Ken Liu is one of the most original, thought-provoking and award-winning short-story writers of his generation. This is the first collection of his work – sixteen stories that invoke the magical within the mundane, by turns profound, beguiling and heartbreaking.

Included here are: The Man Who Ended History: A Documentary (Finalist for Hugo, Nebula, and Sturgeon Awards), Mono No Aware (Hugo Award winner), The Waves (Nebula Award finalist), The Bookmaking Habits of Select Species (Nebula and Sturgeon award finalists), All the Flavors (Nebula Award finalist), The Litigation Master and the Monkey King (Nebula Award finalist) ,and the most awarded story in the genre's history, The Paper Menagerie (the only story ever to win the Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy awards).©2016 Ken Liu (P)2025 Simon & Schuster Audio

I found The Paper Menagerie a thought-provoking collection of (short) stories. Although not all were as original or captivating as the rest, a few really stood out to me, often due to the uncomfortable themes and ideas covered, whether they were based on true history, or of a more SF nature. Particularly: The Perfect Match, The Waves, The Paper Menagerie & The Man Who Ended History. My honourable mention goes to All the Flavours, which reminded me of the HBO series Warriors, and taught me a couple of additional things regarding the history of the first Chinese in America.
