Albert Camus
In the small coastal city of Oran, Algeria, rats begin rising up from the filth only to die as bloody heaps in the streets. Shortly after, an outbreak of the bubonic plague erupts and envelops the human population. Albert Camus' The Plague is a brilliant and haunting rendering of human perseverance and futility in the face of a relentless terror born of nature.

it was ups and downs for me with this book

The reading may not be perfect but it is never less than committed and expressive - there is a lot of feeling here and I was able to enjoy the whole book without resenting the reader.
I was supposed to study La Peste for A level in 1972 but I was a bad student so I knew little about it until this. Now I can’t believe they gave this to 17/18 year olds! It is quite austere but ultimately inspiring. Camus validates sympathy and selfless dedication to alleviating the suffering of others because ….. because what else is there to do as a human being?
