About this listen
Best friends. Broken promises. Buried secrets.
Ten years ago Rose made a promise to help her goddaughter Eloise if she was ever in trouble.
A promise she may live to regret.
But she meant every word… until the night Eloise turns up on her doorstep covered in blood and asking for the unthinkable.
Rose has buried secrets before. Only this time they're about to come back and haunt her.
The Promise You Made is the addictive new psychological thriller by A J McDine.
Perfect for fans of Jackie Kabler, Shalini Boland, Lisa Jewell, Sue Watson and Samantha Hayes.
The story itself was enjoyable and well written, but very predictable - I'd guessed the premise of the book the minute the girl called up. I enjoyed it, though.
Decent enough

I’ve read all of AJ’s thrillers, they’re all wonderful but this is my favourite. She just gets better and better.
McDine has an amazing talent for creating characters whose lives you get sucked into from the first turn of the page. But what makes this story so compelling is the protagonist who’s like an old cat lady you dislike, feel sorry for, then fall in love with as her story unfolds.
The book opens with a bang when Rose’s best friend’s daughter - who she hasn’t seen since she was a young girl - shows up on the doorstep asking Rose to honour the promise she made to her years ago: to come whenever she needs help. Only the help the girl needs isn’t quite what Rose is expecting!
McDine’s writing is so tight and realistic - her dialogue particularly - that you forget you’re reading fiction as you spend time with her three-dimensional characters. It’s a real talent to be able to do that, especially to create wonderful character arcs that make you change your mind as they develop slowly and believably. So many thrillers blur into each other but I never forget AJ’s because I feel like I’ve lived every moment.
Great story and I love the narrator; her performance is natural and engaging. What more can you ask for?
Can’t WAIT for the next one!
McDine honours her promises as usual ...
