I like that the protagonist fights for his loved ones and justice, not just some religious ferver and that he doesn't always win. Makes him more human

i had already listened to sacred treason by the same author and loved it. I was nearly put off by other reviews of the roots of betrayal.but i took a risk and I am glad i did. the book is easy to listen to and well narated. it makes history come alive and i wish there were more writers like this. I will look forward to the third in the series , the final sacrament, which is to be published in july 2012.
I would heartidly recommend it

I listened to and was impressed with the first book "Sacred Treason" - both the story and the narration. The Roots of Betrayal was just as good - although it did take me longer to warm to the story.Now downloading the third.

I loved the first book so was very much looking forward to this one. But somehow James Forrester got a bit lost with it. There is a lot of wasted action. Very well-written action, but action not really adding anything to the story. I found myself fast-forwarding through chunks of pirate action at sea in order to get back to William Harley's story. All the characters are relevant but the balance in terms of time spent on the actions of secondary characters is awry. If I had listened to/read this one first, I would not have bothered with the other book. At 416 pages in the hard copy, I think it was around 100 pages too long.

This book meandered its way through a fairly ok plot but I never became engaged with the characters. Most were unpleasant but not even in an interesting way. I zoned out of several parts. The narrator deserves better material.
