Mary Lennox, a spoiled, ill-tempered, and unhealthy child, comes to live with her reclusive uncle in Misselthwaite Manor after the death of her parents. There, she meets a hearty housekeeper and her spirited brother, a dour gardener, a cheerful robin, and her willful, hysterical, and sickly cousin, Master Colin.

With the help of the robin, Mary finds the door to a secret garden, neglected and hidden for years. When she decides to restore the garden in secret, the story becomes a charming journey into the places of the heart, where faith restores health, flowers refresh the spirit, and the magic of the garden, coming to life anew, brings health to Colin - and to Mary, happiness.

Critic reviews

"It will rapt most children away, for after fifty years, its spell is still as strong; a blend of power, beauty, vivid interest and honest goodness. Yes, if this is magic, it is good magic." ( New York Times Book Review)

Having never read this as a child it's been on my TBR for a while. Johanna Ward's narration is excellent. She really brings Mary in particular to life. Highly recommended.

Fantastic read. Well narrated.

Would you listen to The Secret Garden again? Why?

Yes, it was as great a listen as I remembered it being a great read many years ago. I remember reading the book as a child and not being able to put it down until I had finished it. I wondered if it would still be the same for me now. It was!!!!!!!!!! how great. It took me straight back to my childhood, and it was wonderful. I had to keep listening to the very end.

As great as I remembered!!

I really loved listening to this beautiful story. It was read to me when I was a small child and now in my seventies I loved it even more. I think it is suitable for any age. It simply warms the heart especially if you love to be out in nature. The Narrator read this perfectly with brilliant accents for each character. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who likes a feelgood story to make them smile and uplift their mood.

Really lovely story.

A terrific reading of a book that feels more relevant now than when it was published. Absolutely stunning.
