About this listen

One fine day, A.D. 70, Sosia Camillina quite literally runs into Marcus Didius Falco on the steps of the Forum. It seems Sosia is on the run from a couple of street toughs, and after a quick and dirty rescue, P.I. Falco wants to know why.

Falco finds out that Sosia, the niece of a highly placed senator, holds the secret to a stockpile of silver pigs, ingots intended for no good use. Hoping for future favors from Sosia's powerful uncle, Falco embarks on an intricate case of smuggling, murder, and treason that reaches into the palace itself. And if he does not tread lightly, the treacherous puzzle of the silver pigs could buy him a one-way ticket to his own funeral pyre.

I haven't written a review for Audible before but I felt I just had to write one for the audiobook of 'The Silver Pigs' - it was the best audiobook I've ever heard! I enjoyed reading the book, but the superlative narration by Christian Rodska elevated it to the next step and made you feel like you can see, smell and hear ancient Rome. He was the perfect Falco, wry, pragmatic, street-wise but also with a massive soft streak inside. The south London accent used for Falco was fabulous and brought across Falco's solidly plebein origins in the dodgy Aventine neighbourhood of Rome. Other characters were well characterised - special mention to the tolerant and soft spoken Decimus Camillus Verus, the sweet and youthful Sosia Camellina, the spikey and intelligent Helena Justina, and the energetic 'jolly old hockeysticks' Titus. The narrative was well paced, with Christian Rodska drawing out the humour, irony, pathos and suspense of the book very skilfully. If you like Lindsey Davis' books, I'd highly recommend trying out this audio book!

I enjoyed the story, it is a great plot. Placing the story on Rome and Roman Britain makes an interesting and enjoyable addition to the story.

Enjoyable read.

A book I've loved for a long time read brilliantly with humour and character.

A beautifully read romp of a tale!

I wasn't sure how I'd like this, as I was first introduced to Falco by the BBC radio dramas, and have since enjoyed the print books. But the narration is so well done that I think this is my favourite version. Maybe it helps that this is a BBC production too - it certainly fits well with the sounds and voices from the dramas.

A great reading of an entertaining story
