Chronic pain is a global epidemic.
28 million people in the UK alone struggle with back pain, headaches or some other pain that resists all treatment, often being told again and again that there is no cure.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
Frustrated by the lack of effective treatment for his own debilitating pain, psychotherapist Alan Gordon developed Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), a mind-body protocol that eliminated his own chronic pain and has transformed the lives of thousands of his patients. In a ground-breaking study, PRT helped 98% of patients reduce their pain levels and 66% were completely cured.
Now, in his incredible and inspiring book, The Way Out, Gordon shows you how to:
- Understand how the brain can unintentionally 'learn' chronic pain
- Turn off pain signals that have become 'stuck'
- Use revolutionary techniques to break the cycle of fear that causes chronic pain
- Develop long-term strategies for living pain-free
Game-changing, practical and full of real-life stories from Gordon’s clinical practice, The Way Out will change the way you think about pain forever – and give you a way out of your own chronic pain.
‘With straightforward and practical wisdom, The Way Out presents a sophisticated yet simple approach to understanding and healing chronic pain.’ Dr Gabor Maté, bestselling author of The Myth of Normal
‘Quite possibly the most important pain book ever written. The Way Out will be the answer for millions who live in constant agony.’ Annie Grace, author of This Naked Mind
‘All chronic pain patients owe it to themselves to read this book’ Andrew Weil, MD, New York Times bestselling author of Spontaneous Healing
‘Every clinician who treats chronic pain should read The Way Out’ Steven Richeimer, MD, Chief of Pain Medicine, USC Keck School of Medicine
‘The Way Out is quite simply the most effective treatment for chronic pain’ Howard Schubiner, MD, clinical professor at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, and founder and director of the Mind-Body Medicine Program, Ascension Providence Hospital

The book goes about teaching the patient about “neuroplastic pain” which is essentially that the majority of chronic pain is caused by learned neural pathways and the brain misinterpreting safe, normal signals from the body as dangerous and thus painful rather than due to lingering physical damage. This does really go against our intuitive beliefs about chronic pain as it does feel 100% physical but the authors provide a very convincing and evidence-based argument. The authors then guide you through the process of PRT which has been shown to be very effective in a randomised controlled trial they were involved in that was published this year.
For anyone that does give the book a try, I would also highly recommend listening to the author’s podcast “Tell me about your pain” and also there is a 7-min guided audio for somatic tracking (the cornerstone exercise of PRT) on the curable app (under the brain training section). If you don’t want to pay for the app, you should be should be able to find that audio for free if you google “PRT in the curable app”.
So Simple yet Hugely Effective
