Summary

Young girls are disappearing around the country, and there is nothing to connect them to one another. Dr Tony Hill sets his team an exercise: they are given the details and asked to discover links between the cases. Only one officer comes up with a theory that is ridiculed….until one of their own is murdered.

For Tony Hill, the murder becomes a matter for personal revenge, and joined by colleague Carol Jordan, he embarks a game where hunter and hunted can all too easily be reversed.

Critic reviews

"A deliciously gruesome serial killer thriller. Ms McDermid finds new ways to shock and revolt us." ( New York Times)
"Val McDermid is an accomplished storyteller, and this scary, fast-moving tale is engrossing." ( Daily Telegraph)

A compelling page turner, masterful in its use of language. But there is a logical flaw in one key aspect of the plot which I can't mention here in case of spoilers.

Usually Saul Reichlin is an excellent narrator, well paced yet urgent when required. At home in the RP world of the usual thriller, he is adrift in the sea of regional accents required in this case which is a shame.

Although I had seen this story on TV I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it.
Brilliant narrator!

Judging by the amount of positive mentions that this narrator gets he must have a lot of friends prepared to write him a positive review and post it on here. There is no excuse for some of the very poor accents, they're terrible, I'm staggered that no one saw fit to tell him to just read it straight, we can work the rest out. I genuinely feel some of the characters, especially the females lose a lot of their gravitas and on occasion the actual substance of what they're saying by being portrayed so poorly.
A high ranking female Police officer disciplining her staff in a voice more akin to that of Wendy Craig's "Listen With Mother" left a lot to be desired. Saul Reichlin is clearly a professional as his standard reading voice very much fits the bill, more of that standard would have been welcomed. The book weaves a few trails here and there and held my interest in the characters, despite Saul's best attempts to make me loath them, I'm tempted by the follow up but will need to steady myself for another "performance" from our narrator.

Good Book, Narration Awful.

Well written and narrated. A few loose ends but presumably followed up In a later book. Some graphically described violence not for the squeamish . Strong storylines throughout .

Gripping
