Five hundred and thirty-five days. That was the contract. A number. A deadline. A way home.

I thought I understood the terms.

I didn’t.

The Celestial Spire is the most exclusive hotel in the galaxy. Twelve thousand rooms. A hundred species and humans on leashes in the Grand Lobby.

I told myself it wasn’t my business, until I recognized one of them.

Rafe and Lorian own the Spire. Imperial-born. Untouchable. They gave me a title, a uniform, a place in their world. When I helped humans escape, I expected to be put to death. Instead, I became a human pet.

Surprisingly, when Rafe and Lorian’s collar closed around my throat, I felt something I hadn’t felt since I left Earth, like I was exactly where I was supposed to be.

This is a love story. Just not the kind you survive unchanged.

The author gives detailed warning about the content and potential triggers at the outset and on her website. This is a long and, at times, harrowing listen, and I must say I was uncomfortable with several parts of the story and the practices described. Our heroine is a young lady from Earth who is intelligent and resourceful, but tricked into working in the alien empre and becoming the puppet of twin rulers of a rich company in order to thwart an organisation trying to free humans from alien subjugation as pets or slaves. The basis of the story is she teaches the dominant masters to become more human and appreciative of her by seeming to be totally submissive to them. Traitors, religious and societal demands, conflicting laws and strict hierarchy with public punishment for violations as simple as disobedience are in the mix. There are many parts to the plot as her role, status, security and feelings for others evolve and are dictated by events.

Having male and female narrators makes it very clear whose viewpoint we're hearing and both narrators differentiate the characters well with appropriate emotion and tone.

I received a free copy, and am voluntarily leaving this review.

Marathon emotional rollercoaster for heroine.
