About this listen

Hawaii, December 1941—Saving the past, risking the future.

Eighty-three-year-old billionaire Andrew Whitlock recruits Rachel Hunt, a thirty-three-year-old former homicide detective with a tarnished reputation, for a daring mission: travel back in time to Honolulu, just days before December 7, 1941. Rachel's task is to locate and save Andrew's father—a man he never met—from perishing in his fighter plane during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

As the mission begins to spiral out of control, Rachel finds herself hunted by Naval Intelligence and the Honolulu Police. Amidst the chaos, Rachel discovers that she might have a fleeting chance to change the entire outcome of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor—if she can survive.

I loved this book. It’s well laid out into phases and the chapters set in 1941 Honolulu are excellent. There is one glaring inconsistency that annoyed me and it may have been because there are two authors at play here. But this was sloppy: when we are introduced to the character Thomas Rowe/Roe (I listened to this book so not sure how this characters surname is spelled) we hear how his middle name is John. His friends call him TJ. Then a few chapters later he meets Rachel and he tells her that the R for Thomas R Rowe/Roe is for Randall - a family name. and she comments that he sounds like he would be a Supreme Court judge. This characters background should have been set in stone before both authors wrote anything about him. I also agree with others that the appearance of Rachel’s sister after her return from 1942 wasn’t explained at all and left as some things happen! I found myself scrolling back to see if I missed the explanation but there was none. The time jump from her departure in 2024 to her return in 2027 wasn’t understandable and I couldn’t see what impact this would have had on Rachel’s life nor was this explained. BUT although I sound like I’m being very critical, I loved the book and have re listened to it. I love the description of Honolulu, the historic hotels and restaurants along with fashion of the time. Plus of course the military set up in 1941 along with the every day happening in Honolulu at the time. I loved Victoria Gilbert and felt she could have been a heroine in her own series. She was a My Gal Friday spitfire!

Iconic setting to change the past

A highly entertaining, well written time travel story with a brilliant setting and great characters. Loved Rachel full of attitude and fighting skills. I couldn't put it down and have already bought the next one. Narration is great, easy to listen to and with a good range. Great stuff. Highly recommended.
