Barbara Erskine returns with this beautiful and haunting tale of dark forces and mystical powers

Cambridge, present day: Following the death of her mother, Abi Rutherford receives a mysterious bequest – a misshapen crystal sphere known as the Serpent’s Stone, which gives her glimpses into mysteries long concealed by the church.

Western England, 25 AD: A stranger has come to the chilly Somerset wetlands, with a story of hope and reconciliation. But he is being followed by powerful forces, determined that he will not undermine Roman rule in Britain.

Abi questions what connects these ancient events and her gift. Why do so many people seem desperate to hide the truth?

A dark shadow has fallen across the centuries, and a woman is in fear for her life. But is it danger that awaits her, or the final truth so long whispered across the echoes of time?

I tried to read Barbara Erskines Lady of Hay many years ago but found myself putting it down a lot and then having to re read bits over and over to pick up the thread again
I found this audio book good: I listened to it all but I was not over keen on the narrator. If I,m honest I prefer men narrating I found like the lady of Hay that it just lacked the suspense I had hoped for and whereas I could listen over and over to The Woman In Black by Susan Hill for me this is not a book I would want to listen to again

Good but not that good

I read my first book by this author and enjoyed it so much that I immediately downloaded 2 more , not realising that each story has the same template, different;names, jobs slightly different era of ghost but essentially so similar that all the way through you can predict every move if you have read any one of them

I enjoyed this but (spoiler alert)

The narrator was awful, I just gave up. The story was great, I’ve read it in physical form. Sadly listening to it was confusing and just plain irritating. I know 7.99 is cheap these days for a book but honestly this was such a waste of a credit.

I couldn’t listen to much more of the awful narration style.
