About this listen

Below a dark and angry sea, men in the submarines of the British Navy prowl. Explosive spherical mines lie silently in wait for their weathered vessels. At any time, the abyssals of the Atlantic can be rocked by the terrifying din of a mine exploding and a boat imploding. Manning these cramped vessels is a fulltime hardship, with myriad risks and sometimes terrifying emergencies. But an even more dangerous vocation can be found on land at the British Navy’s Special Counter-measures - a place where men with either a death wish or nothing left to lose defuse enormous seamines. If any of these subjects stimulate your interest, Douglas Reeman’s Twelve Seconds to Live explores them with zest and tasteful drama in this masterful work of naval fiction.

Not so much a story as a series of character sketches. Bits of parallel action overlap but then peter out or simply stop leaving the reader to figure out the ending.

Damp squib

Personally very informative for me, I was aware of BP of course, but this story gave me a good insight to what went on there, and the effects on the staff.

Made me more aware of what went at Bletchley Park.

Too much build up and relationships in the background. Not enough actual action and tension, in spite of the title.

Different balance to this book compared to Reeman’s usual

Did not like the narrator David Rintoul is my favourite for Douglas Reeman books. I am sure I have read this book before, found the story hard to follow on times so many people, ships, places. Just felt it jumped around a fair bit.

Hard to follow

I cant say enough how badly this is narrated. The guy has no idea how this was supposed to be done. Please get it reread by David Rintoul.
Bought the book instead. First time in 2 years i haven`t finished listening to a book.
