Living with high blood pressure can be overwhelming which then also causes your blood pressure to increase so it's a vicious cycle. I was quite surprised at how much this author truly understood about the constant worrying I was having and the stress that comes with high blood pressure. Millions of people live with high blood pressure but it's a small percentage that are actually able to get it under control. I've been living with hypertension for a few years now and I have tried a few changes here and there but would get frustrated when I didn't see immediate changes and gave up. So my partner suggested that I needed to educate myself better about my diagnosis and said they were concerned for me if I didn't learn how to get things under control.

There are many ways to help reduce your high blood pressure such as exercising, eating right, learning how to reduce my stress, and ensuring I get enough sleep. So when I listened to chapter 3 which covers various medications I was very intrigued to listen to what meds I could look at to help me with a quicker approach of trying to get my symptoms under control faster so that I would feel more intrigued to work on the other areas such as exercise and changing my diet. This book is written by a pharmacist so hearing about the different medications made me feel more at ease since it was coming from an expert.

The author reviews what meds are reliable and other meds that have negative side effects and therefore should be avoided. Also, I had no idea that while taking specific meds, there are negative interactions when eating certain foods with the med. I feel like with this book I am more empowered to be able to make a plan as far as what steps I am going to do first, what steps I am willing to commit to, and how I can gain support from my partner to ensure I stay on track with my changes.

I think this book would be great for either the person who lives with high blood pressure or anyone in a relationship with someone who has high blood pressure so they are more educated and can be more supportive.

High blood pressure can be a silent danger, and as I've personally experienced, it's crucial to be proactive in understanding and managing it. Chapter 2, "What Puts You at Risk for High Blood Pressure?" hit home for me. It discusses various risk factors, and it was an eye-opener to recognize that some of these applied to my lifestyle. It prompted me to make immediate changes in my daily routines, from reducing salt intake to engaging in regular physical activity. Sullivan's explanations are simple and easy to follow, making them accessible for anyone, even if you're not well-versed in medical jargon. Pam Hurley's narration of this book was excellent,

"Understanding High Blood Pressure" is extremely informative and provides what we need to know to make changes in our lives. The audiobook explains the mechanisms and issues that cause high blood pressure, the symptoms, risk factors, and related medical conditions. The high percentage of adults in the USA with hypertension is alarming, particularly when the related or exacerbated conditions are considered. Even if the 'silent killer' doesn't kill you, it can make your life miserable due to a stroke, heart attack, or other related issues.

This audiobook provides practical ways to take charge of our own health - reduce stress, monitor our BP, and make good decisions about diet and exercise. While a lot of medical information is provided, it is done in a way that is logical and not overwhelming. Hearing this has made me acutely aware of my own need to take charge of my own health and not depend on the MDs (medicine dispensers) to "fix me" with medications because I followed the standard American diet or failed to deal with my stress in an effective way or exercise.

Listen to this work and make the decisions needed to live a healthy and proactive life!
