Meet Willa Knox, a woman who stands braced against a world which seems to hold little mercy for her and her family - or their old, crumbling house, falling down around them. Willa's two grown-up children, a new-born grandchild, and her ailing father-in-law have all moved in at a time when life seems at its most precarious. But when Willa discovers that a pioneering female scientist lived on the same street in the 1800s, could this historical connection be enough to save their home from ruin? And can Willa, despite the odds, keep her family together?

Having the author read her own book and read it so well, was a real bonus on what is already a wonderful book. Again I learnt so much from Ms Kingsolver. Her talent is to tell a gripping story about characters you come to really care for while giving you nuggets of facts along the way. Of course her books have a political bias but to me that is a plus.

Another great book from Barbara Kingsolver

Loved it. Felt immersed in a place with stories separated by the centuries. Didn’t want it to end!

Enchanting story telling

There is a surprising joy in hearing a story told with the particular nuances and tones in which the story unfolded from the authors pen. Barbara Kingsolver is a masterful storyteller, she allows her characters to tell their own story in how their deepest emotions, joys and turmoil , beautifully unfold the story. The author artfully manages the transitions between families living in two different centuries. The house in which both families live and have almost inadvertently ‘landed’, provides a rich pallet of nuance and familiarity. A highly recommended read!

Masterful story telling and narration

This is an intricate, colourful and engrossing tapestry - or two tapestries of a book, linking the lives of two families living 150 years apart on the same street of a New Jersey town. As always with Ms Kingsolver’s books, it starts gently and seemingly strangely, and gradually draws you in to fall in love with her main characters. So many issues are stitched into this story - climate change, political corruption, the broken economics of the capitalist system are just some - explored with and rendered in the context of the lives of these people. Each alternating chapter leads seamlessly into the next. I truly didn’t want it to end.

Superb and satisfying

Barbara Kingsolver is a really accomplished author; she’s constructed intricate parallel stories that are linked and reflect each other. She recognises historical contexts and uses her characters to debate the issues of the time; she explores relationships and can write w sensitivity.
This is good writing and great entertainment. Kingsolver narrates the text well enough herself but I occasionally become confused between the male and female voices.. not too much of an issue.
