Antes de 1988, nunca existió un país soberano llamado Palestina. El nombre fue una etiqueta de la época romana para una provincia, luego una expresión geográfica bajo imperios —bizantino, omeya, otomano— y después un territorio del Mandato Británico (1922-1948) sin soberanía palestina.
