  • What Making Quilts and Writing Novels Have in Common - with Marianne Fons
    Jun 10 2026
In this episode Marianne Fons joins to talk about teaching quilting on public TV with her Quilty partner Liz Porter, long before the internet and youtube! It was great to be able to ask her about what the business landscape looked like when direct mail was how you reached your customers. Surprisingly, some aspects of business haven’t changed at all, and we talked about the importance of the right person doing the right job within a growing business, and that she and Liz were great opposites and compliments to each other.Recently, she has shifted her interests to becoming a novelist, and has a book coming out next year. Our conversation covers some of the similarities in creating books and creating quilts, and lot about creative inspiration in general.Show NotesWebsite - https://www.mariannefons.com/Substack -Fons and Porter - https://quiltershalloffame.net/fons-porter/Mary Fons - https://www.maryfons.com/Eleanor Burns - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eleanor_BurnsMontavilla Sewing Center - https://www.montavillasewing.com/Tara Miller - https://quiltdistrict.com/Six Know-it-Alls - https://www.youtube.com/@SixKnowItAllsEuropean Patchwork Meeting - https://patchwork-europe.eu/en/home/Red and White quilt collection - https://folkartmuseum.org/exhibitions/infinite-variety-three-centuries-of-red-and-white-quilts/Iowa Quilt Muesum - https://www.iowaquiltmuseum.org/Iowa Theater - https://www.the-iowa.com/Quilt Talk - https://huntersdesignstudio.com/product/book-quilt-talk-autographed/Page and Pixel - https://www.page-and-pixel.com/C&T Publishing - https://ctpub.com/Portland Art Museum - https://portlandartmuseum.org/David Hockney - https://www.hockney.com/homeBERNINA - https://www.bernina.com/en-US/Home-United-StatesBaby Lock - https://babylock.com/Janome - https://www.janome.com/*Theo of Golden - https://amzn.to/47rMiP9Big Magic - https://amzn.to/4tbZuQvBrené Brown - https://brenebrown.com/*Dare to be a Great Writer - https://amzn.to/3PNPAGd*Affiliate link - I might make a commission but you don’t pay moreHow to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a hand-made, never AI, reader-supported publication. • Judging Quilts Professionally - with Kathie Beltz
    May 27 2026

In this episode Kathie Beltz joins us to talk about all things to do with judging quilts for quilt shows. She covers the things to pay attention to if you hope to be considered for a prize, and I got to ask about criteria for bindings, which is something I’ve had notes on when I’ve entered competitions!

One of the things she points out is that, while design definitely matters, many of the criteria included in quilt judging have to do with making a quilt that will last. The critiques you might get about your stitches are not just the judges being picky!

  • Learning How to Manage Hustle Culture - with Lauren Goche
    May 13 2026

In this episode my friend Lauren Goche joins the pod. She’s not in the craft industry, she’s a realtor – but as an entrepreneur who has built her own business, she has faced similar challenges around burnout, hustle culture, and hiring help. She’s a fierce advocate for women and a community builder in my neighborhood, so I’m happy to bring some of her wisdom here to share.

We talk about the growing pains in business - working too much, learning to hire help, and learning how to delegate once you’ve hired it! Lauren has also really prioritized rest, and how to maximize even small breaks from work. She also talks about being public about what you stand for, and how that has brought her well-aligned clients to work with, most of whom become friends.
