Thomas Stearns Eliot OM (26 Sept 1888 – 4 Jan 1965) was a poet, essayist, publisher, playwright, and literary and social critic. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, to a prominent Boston Brahmin family, he moved to England in 1914 at the age of 25 and went on to settle, work and marry there. He became a British subject in 1927 at the age of 39, subsequently renouncing his American citizenship.

The ancient Greeks revered Homer and Hesiod and often cited their names together in theological and theological works. Astrophil and Stella is an enchanting English sonnet sequence composed by Sir Philip Sidney in the 1580s. The title itself holds a celestial allure: Astrophil derives from the Greek words "aster" (meaning star) and "phil" (meaning lover). Stella is the Latin word for star. In this poetic journey, Astrophil represents the star lover, while Stella embodies the star itself. "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" is a late 14th-century chivalric romance in Middle English. The author is unknown; the title was given centuries later. It is one of the best-known Arthurian stories, with its plot combining two types of folk motifs: the beheading game, and the exchange of winnings. Written in stanzas of alliterative verse, each of which ends in a rhyming bob and wheel; it draws on Welsh, Irish, and English stories, as well as the French chivalric tradition.

He promised the mayor a solution to their problem with the rats. Purgatory is the second part of Dante's Divine Comedy, following the Inferno, and preceding the Paradiso. The poem was written in the early 14th century. It is an allegory telling of the climb of Dante up the Mount of Purgatory, guided by the Roman poet Virgil, except for the last four cantos at which point Beatrice takes over as Dante's guide.
