Almost 200,000 African Americans fought to save the Union, many believing that military service was the pathway to freedom. Yet their journeys for liberation continued. They marched across taxing terrain, performed backbreaking labor, and endured corporeal punishment. They agonized over families still enslaved and suffered virulent diseases. They fought on bravely, yet thousands ran. Chafing against restraints and violence, they briefly liberated themselves.

Historically, Hoodoo was the magic of the disenfranchised, marginalized, and vulnerable. It was born of the need to obtain justice, power, and protection, as these were not typically naturally forthcoming. The ancestors and earliest practitioners of Hoodoo were enslaved African Americans, followed by their descendants and neighbors.

When we hear of Jamaica or the Caribbean, we think of beautiful islands of paradise with sun, sea and sand, reggae music, cannabis, and "irie" people like Usain Bolt - people who are living out their best dreams, desires, and lives.
