Robinson Crusoe, published in 1719, was Defoe’s first novel and survives as his best-known work. Robinson Crusoe is considered by many to be the first novel in the English language. The term 'Robinsonade' has even been coined to describe the various spin-offs of Robinson Crusoe. In 1665, London was struck by the bubonic plague, an epidemic that was the last major instance of the bubonic plague in England.
